Welcome to your Community Center!

The mission of the Beacon Community Center is to provide high quality, inclusive, year round educational cultural and recreational programming to improve the lives of individuals and families of all ages in Beacon and surrounding communities.

We believe that every member of a community is valuable; should have access to a safe place to learn and recreate regardless of his/her age, gender, ethnicity, cultural/religious background, or economic status and; is entitled to experience the highest in quality and integrity in staff and service delivery.  The Beacon Community Center has been providing  such to the citizens of Beacon since its reorganization in 1984 and prior as the Neighborhood Service Organization.  Each year, the youth program reaches over two hundred youth in its comprehensive after school, summer and teen programming.  The Beacon Community Center also has enriching programs that serve the middle and senior adult population.  We are committed to programming that fosters excellence, inspires creativity, communicates tolerance and building a stronger more cohesive community.

Beacon Elders (BE)

BE creative, BE active, BE Social, BE involved.  Seniors are able to participate in a wide variety of programming that attends to their need to socialize, be creative, be active and continue to contribute and be purposeful in their community.  Scheduled activities include visual arts classes, art and craft instruction, yoga classes, exercise classes, and a weekly drop in center.  Additionally they volunteer as grandparents for children who participate in our programs and share their life wisdoms and experiences.

Beacon Community Center After School Programs

Our three after school programs offer academic enrichment and recreation for one hundred youth aged five thru twelve as an alternative to engaging in unconstructive and potentially destrictive activities.  Our academic program includes, homework help, one to one tutoring and literacy based activities such as the production of a youth organized newsletter.  We also endeavor to provide high quality creative experiences for our youth including dance, yoga, cooking instruction and environmental education to supplement what our children are getting  (or in some cases not getting) during their school day hours.

Teen Programs

We currently provide safe and well supervised activities for teens aged thirteen thru nineteen through a bi-monthly drop-in center on the second and forth Fridays from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.  This is the only program of its kind in the Beacon area.  We are quite proud of it as it is a place where teens are able through activities in a supportive environment, boost their self-esteem and form nurturing relationships with positive adult role models.  Our future goals for this forum is to provide comprehensive programming which will include male and female empowerment groups, creative expression workshops, one to one tutoring, college exploration, career development and financial literacy.

The Beacon Community Center also holds a Teen Basketball Program which is housed at the South Avenue Elementary School.  This program is scheduled to begin again in the beginning of the 2009 school year.  It will meet on Wednesdays for thirteen to fifteen year olds from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM will be the meeting time for the sixteen thru eighteen year old age group.
